Description:

The Downtown YMCA is located in a historic multi-story building, over a hundred years old.  This project started with research of historic records at the Denver library where I was able to locate some of the original building permit drawings.  The narrow hallways and circuitous circulation created a challenge for this remodel project.  I worked with the structural engineer to create a new stair opening and interior windows in the existing two foot thick stone walls to improve circulation throughout the three floors of the YMCA.  The remodel included adding a spin studio, pilates studio, and group exercise studio on the third floor, as well as converting a dark storage area of the basement into a weight room.  The front entry, locker rooms, and finishes throughout the building were also remodeled as part of this project.  It was important that the facility remain open during construction, so I also developed a detailed phasing plan so construction could occur without closing down the facility.
